Addiction and mental illness can affect anyone. Mental illness and addiction know no boundaries. They cross every age, gender, race and income. At Recovery Resources, we provide care to people 18 years and older. People at every economic level seek out our services. We provide support to families. We provide resources to communities. We give people hope.

Who we are

Addiction and mental health challenges can affect anyone. Approximately 1,100 college freshmen will complete suicide this year; the majority as the result of untreated depression.

Approximately 1 in 4 high school and college students report binge drinking at least once a month.
Heroin has become an epidemic in Northeast Ohio- in 2014, 2,347 people in Ohio died from heroin overdose, making it the second in drug overdose in the U.S.
Mental illness strikes 1 in 4 Americans, and young adults are the most vulnerable to its onset.
We predict that 2-5% of people who engage in online gaming and other gambling activity will develop problem gambling behavior.

At Recovery Resources, providing comprehensive behavioral health care is our passion and we work tirelessly with those we serve and our community partners to make this goal a reality, but we can’t do it without your help.

Our experience made us who we are

In 2000, two Cleveland agencies merged to become Recovery Resources, where mental illness and addictions of all types could be treated under one roof in an integrated way– a critical need for those who were dually diagnosed. This family soon grew with the addition of Community Challenge in 2008, which increased our footprint with young people in the suburban West Shore.

Our continuum of care grew in 2011 with the addition of Spectrum of Supportive Services, which broadened our housing services and added services focused on helping people re-enter the workforce; and in October of 2018 we announced our partnership with MetroHealth to collaborate on behavioral health and addiction services. The partnership expands services for the community, allowing current Recovery Resources’ clients and MetroHealth patients to receive coordinated care for mental illness, alcoholism, drug and other addictions.

Our History In A Nutshell

Alcohol Services of Cleveland

One of our two founding agencies, Alcoholism Services of Cleveland, opened its doors in 1955. This would not have been possible without Marty Baker, who was helped into recovery by Alcoholics Anonymous. Wife of a prominent Cleveland businessman, Mrs. Baker saw that many others needed help, so when the National Council on Alcoholism tried to start a treatment agency in Cleveland, she worked tirelessly, raising $90,000 from her husband’s business associates. It was enough to open a small storefront on Huron Road. The center grew, and in recognition of the need to address all addictions, changed its name, becoming Recovery Resources.
Neighborhood Counseling Services

Our second founding agency also has roots in the late 1970s. It began when Mel Edmonds, a steel worker, found himself disabled and out of work. He tried to get help, but found the existing community programs inadequate. Determined to change this, he rented a small storefront on Fulton Road in Ohio City, set up a kitchen table and started providing counseling to anyone who dropped in. Gradually, with help from others, he was able to secure grant money to expand, and Neighborhood Counseling Services began its journey to becoming a premier provider of mental health services in the community.
Community Challenge

In 2008, Recovery Resources formed a strategic partnership with Community Challenge, a group working to prevent the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs in Cleveland’s West Shore communities. Community Challenge was founded 23 years earlier by concerned parents and citizens of Rocky River to help reduce substance use and abuse by young people in its community. Community Challenge set its sights on broadening its reach throughout the West Shore communities, and since joining forces with RR has now provided prevention services in nearly all of the West Shore communities.
Spectrum

Spectrum of Supportive Services, which joined the Recovery Resources family in 2011, focused on the provision of consumer-operated services and self-help/peer support services for Cuyahoga County adults with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. Operating six houses, condominiums or apartment clusters, these supported housing sites focus on providing as much autonomy as possible to those we serve. Spectrum is also home to the Employment Alliance, a supported employment program that assists with employment preparation, job coaching and on-the-job advocacy; the Warm Line, a peer-support staffed telephone line that provides a listening ear and transfers calls to Mobile Crisis when necessary; and six core Social Enterprises - businesses that employ clients living with mental health and substance abuse diagnoses to help them gain skills they want for competitive employment. These businesses include Custom Framing, Onsite Café Management, Bed Bug Eradication (using a safe, effective chemical-free, and cost-effective heat treatment process), Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning, Lawn & Landscape Care and Janitorial Service.
The MetroHealth System

The MetroHealth System, Cuyahoga County’s public health system, is honoring its commitment to create a healthier community by building a new hospital on its main campus in Cleveland. The buildings, and the 25 acres of green space around them, are catalyzing the revitalization of MetroHealth’s West Side neighborhood.

Under this new agreement, MetroHealth patients will be able to receive specialized care for behavioral health and addiction disorders from Recovery Resources professionals. Clients under the care of Recovery Resources will have access to MetroHealth services, linking them to additional primary care and preventive care options.

MetroHealth and Recovery Resources share similar missions serving Cuyahoga County’s most vulnerable residents. In 2017, MetroHealth created an Office of Opioid Safety, to address the growing opioid addiction problem. Recovery Resources has been serving clients with mental illness, alcohol and drug addictions since 1955.
